Project: Beth Levine

Trend: Fashion History-Beth Levine

Over the weekend I went to a fabulous museum exhibit on shoes. The focus was on a shoe designer I had never heard of named Beth Levine. She was a very talented American designer based in New York City and also, a pretty cool lady.

Beth and her husband, Herbert, formed their own shoe business. Even though Beth was the designer the company was named, “Herbert Levine.” They used a man’s name in order to avoid the chauvinistic attitudes towards women working in the shoe business during the 1940s-1970s.

She and her husband Herbert designed shoes for Broadway Theater, Celebrities, Couture and for Department Stores. (Just a little name-dropping these include: Barbara Streisand, Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy, Liza Minnelli, also, Harrod’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus…. you get the idea!)

Great Shoe Accomplishments!

She is best known for creating mules and for the popularization of boots in the 1960’s. With the combination of Beth’s innovative designs and Nancy Sinatra’s song “These Boots Were Made for Walkin” Herbert Levine soon became a household name.

I really enjoyed her work and her story, so I bought the book describing everything! Below are a couple of my favorite pages, quotes, and of course shoes. Hope you enjoy perusing and maybe learn something new! 🙂

Any book that focusses on shoes makes for one very, very enjoyable read! I used to have a little book showing how shoe trends have evolved through the ages and now I’m wishing I hadn’t misplaced it! Thanks for sharing these hints into the book 🙂
